Waterproofing is the step most homeowners never see, which is exactly why it matters so much. Done correctly, a wet-area membrane keeps moisture locked out of your subfloor, walls and framing for the life of the building. Done poorly — or skipped altogether — it's the root cause of cracked tiles, rising damp, structural timber rot and the kind of remediation bill that dwarfs the original renovation cost. At Alee Tile Worx, proper waterproofing is a non-negotiable part of every wet-area job.
What Happens When Waterproofing Is Skipped or Done Wrong
Water is relentless. Even small amounts of moisture penetrating a grout joint or a poorly sealed tile edge will work its way into the substrate over time. Once moisture reaches the timber or concrete beneath, it causes the adhesive bed to soften and debond, leading to hollow, loose or cracked tiles. In a timber-framed home this can mean black mould, rotting joists and structural damage that takes a full demolition and rebuild to fix. The cost of doing waterproofing properly once is a fraction of what it costs to undo the damage of doing it badly.
Membranes, Systems and Australian Standards
We apply wet-area membranes in compliance with AS 3740 — the Australian standard for waterproofing of domestic wet areas. This means correct membrane selection for the substrate, proper application thickness, reinforcement at all junctions and corners, and a curing period before any tiling begins. We use liquid-applied membrane systems that bond directly to the substrate, form a continuous watertight layer and can be inspected visually before they're covered by tiles. Every wet area we work on — shower, bathroom floor, laundry, outdoor balcony — gets the same standard of treatment.
Always Included in Wet-Area Projects, Never Subcontracted
We don't split the waterproofing off to a separate contractor and then come back for the tiles. We do both ourselves, in sequence, so there is one person accountable for the entire wet-area installation. That continuity matters — if we spot an issue with the membrane when we come to tile, we address it before covering it up. You get a single point of contact for the whole job and the confidence that what's behind the tiles is as solid as what you can see.
